Repair the World is dedicated to making meaningful volunteer service an essential part of Jewish life. We enable people to transform their neighborhoods, cities and lives through service experiences rooted community relationships and in Jewish values, history and heritage.
Repair the World’s signature program, Repair the World Communities, engages young adults in service and social change around education and food justice in neighborhoods in Baltimore, Detroit, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Miami and New York City.
In each city, the Director position is a senior-level, leadership position, responsible for setting strategy, building relationships and managing Repair the World locally, according to the values, best practices and program models of Repair the World. In most communities, a Director supports a cohort of Fellows (ages 21-26) who make a yearlong service commitment with Repair the World. During this year, Repair’s Fellows work closely with three audiences: they use peer-to-peer outreach and recruitment to engage thousands of other young adults in volunteering and learning, they support local nonprofits to create authentic and impactful volunteering and education opportunities for those participants, and they partner with local Jewish organizations with experience or aspirations in driving meaningful service and in supporting young Jewish adults where they are in their Jewishness and in their social impact aspirations.
Repair the World is launching a new site in Atlanta, aiming to build a young Jewish community in Atlanta that coalesces around meaningful service through a Jewish lens and that brings positive impact and urgency to issues of social justice in the community.
The Director of Repair the World Atlanta will oversee the launch and implementation of a successful Repair site in Atlanta and build deep community partnerships. This leader will be passionate about the intersections of Jewish values, social change, young adult engagement and service, and deeply committed to maintaining and building community collaborations and fostering an environment of equity and empowerment. The Director will supervise a period of site development, framing relationships with multiple nonprofit, social change and Jewish communities and experimenting with programming to engage young adults. Then, the Director will oversee a cohort of Repair the World Fellows deepening and driving the work in Atlanta. This is an executive position, reporting to Repair’s Senior Program Director in New York.
- Lead all aspects of site development, including requesting necessary support from the national office, framing critical relationships in Atlanta, and piloting local service and educational programming.
- Research and make decisions about key program components, including neighborhood(s) in which to locate.
- Learn and prepare to implement best practices from other Repair the World Communities.
- Develop and manage deep partnerships with local Jewish, civic, and service-providing organizations serving the communities with which we choose to work.
- Identify methods of lead generation – opportunities for engaging with venues, organizations and other sources of reaching the Jewish young adult target population.
- Begin to build a base of engaged and empowered Jewish young adults in Repair’s local programming.
- Secure housing and workspace for Repair Fellows and event spaces for public programming.
Leadership and Stakeholder Engagement
- Effectively communicate the organization’s mission and goals to a wide variety of audiences and serve as a spokesperson.
- Develop, engage, and manage a local advisory committee.
- Work with Repair’s national staff to engage local funders and cultivate relationships with local stakeholders, ensuring Repair the World Atlanta’s long-term sustainability.
- Promote the power of volunteering to improve lives and support social change for communities that are marginalized and vulnerable.
Supervision and Training (Tentatively beginning August 2018)
- Support recruitment and selection and orient, coach, train and supervise a cohort of Repair the World Fellows.
- Oversee local Fellow training and professional development, including recruitment and engagement of local food and education justice faculty.
Local Program Building: Service Portfolio and Community Partnerships
Work closely with Fellows and staff to:
- Build and sustain relationships and engagement with largest Jewish communities, non-Jewish civic and nonprofit communities and with specific nonprofits engaged with marginalized communities with which Repair serves.
- Plan a robust calendar of programming, including service opportunities that meet the needs of the service partner and the target audience.
- Deepen volunteers’ understanding about the social, economic, and historical context of their service, as well as the connections to Jewish values.
- Guide the development, testing, and refining of local engagement strategies to recruit, attract, and retain community-based young adult volunteers.
- Oversee and grow niche programming that tailors Repair’s model for particular audiences, like teens, college students, and young families.
- Gather, analyze, and learn from data on and experiences with participants, programs, and partners.
- Annually set and regularly refine targets and productivity measures for the program, staff, and Fellows based on articulated assumptions and hypotheses, and prioritize continual learning and improvement.
- Manage local budget, facilities, resources, and vendors.
National Program Building
- Work in close collaboration with a team of Directors and national staff.
- Build awareness and enthusiasm for Repair the World as well as Repair the World Atlanta.
- Manage relationships with local affiliates of Repair the World’s national partners.
- Participate in and contribute to national gatherings, including Fellow orientation and mid-year retreat.
- Track record of successful program leadership and excellence in nonprofit management.
- Ability and comfort in cultivating and stewarding relationships in Atlanta’s Jewish communal, civic and service landscapes.
- Effectiveness with organizational negotiations around collaborations, joint ventures, or shared operations.
- Ability to relate well to young adults and people with diverse backgrounds and experiences.
- Sophisticated awareness of poverty, structural racism, power, and privilege, deep understanding of Jewish perspectives on these topics, and an ability to discuss these issues with diverse groups in ways that empower and open people to learning.
- Facility with an eagerness for all kinds of learning (quantitative, qualitative, relational, anecdotal) and ability to apply lessons learned in real time through appropriate course corrections.
- Exceptional oral and written communication skills.
- Understanding of and strong commitment to volunteerism and service best practices.
- Comfort working both independently and collaboratively.
- Infectious excitement about connecting Jewish values and learning to service and social change work.
- Strong enthusiasm and energy, and ability to thrive in high-pressure environments.
- Direct volunteer management.
- Leading and developing service projects.
- At least six years of management experience, preferably in a nonprofit setting.
- Management of three or more professionals simultaneously.
- External stakeholder relationship management at an executive level or equivalent.
- Excellent facilitation of meetings, trainings, and group-based reflection.
- Working with communities in Atlanta.
- Budget management and fundraising.
- National Service (i.e. City Year, TFA, AmeriCorps).
- Facilitating Jewish service-learning.
- Flexibility, good humor, and eagerness to work in an entrepreneurial environment.
- Commitment to building pluralistic Jewish community.
- Understanding of and positive perspective toward data management.
- Ability to travel up to six times per year, generally to other Repair the World Communities or to nearby retreat locations.
- Ability to work during evenings and weekends on a regular basis.
